Spelling Rules

For those familiar with the F.A.S.T. Spelling Program, these checkpoints will be helpful in explaining the rules.

Short Vowel Power
• 1 tap word
• 1 short vowel before last sound

Vowel Suffix power
• makes single vowel say its name
• jumps over only 1 consonant
• Protect base word at all costs
• Double consonant: hopping
• Drop e:  hoping

CY change
• See the y change to an i
• Consonant Y plus no i suffixes
• Checkmark for CY; 0 for no i suffix
• Plurals: CY, change Y to an I; add es

i before e rule
• Use i before e except after c
• Or when sounded like “a” as in neighbor or weigh
