Modification of Levine for the Classroom

C-ognition: Student not engaged with activities. Thinking is foggy and imprecise.

Adaptations : Change modalities regularly; Experiential & Thinking Skills Plans.

Use ACE Sheet for inquiries; Sharpen thinking by using Six Hats: Regularly Blue Hat topics; students summarize white hat information regularly (concepts & rules) Involve creativity through green and yellow hat thinking, black hat & Meaning TEST (critical) Red hat and Demystify with kid CASTLES during Char. Ed.. Personalization!!!!

A-ttention & Intention: distracted, daydreams, fidgety, disorganized, pace problem

Adaptations: change seat, private office, self-charting, VIPS, HANDS, Preview upcoming events, student previews procedures before activity, Demystify with Concentration Control Sheet (279);  Discuss controls needed for upcoming task.

S-equential: difficulty with directions, deadlines, time lingo, punctuality, order

Adaptations: Work on planner use in Char. Ed; have students rehearse directions by themselves while you rove, summarize with a partner, or draw steps with stick figures.  Parents should be enlisted to aid in organization of student’s time and workspace.

S-patial:difficulty picturing, socializing, comprehending, problem solving & the arts

Adaptations: Lessons should be taught through verbal steps; visuals follow. If child has trouble with personal orientation, have them talk themselves through space [I walk into the gym, then turn left into the locker room]. Frequent notebook checks. Parent organization of workspace and materials at home would be helpful.

T-empory & Long term memory: difficulty with summaries, quizzes, and tests.

Adaptations: frequent whisper rehearsals, picture rehearsals, picture mapping. Have 20 object pegs for key ideas, 5 to 7 slogans. May use of topical system to remember events.

Study guides can count same grade as test. May use 5 by 8 study card or Cheat breaks. 

L-anguage: trouble with decoding and encoding; difficulties with abstract language.

Adaptations: FAST schedules 1-3 for decoding & encoding problems. Abstract language issues utilize P3, teach metaphors, similes and idioms like vocabulary. Concept review through paired questioning, charades, pictionary, constructionary.  Follow Write Source for writing. Teach affixes; Encourage HOB and Journal in student’s area of strength.

E-ncoding & Motor: trouble handwriting, copying, algorithms, gym activites, arts

Adaptations: TA works with kids on self-paced handwriting program, pencil grips.Teach copying [word, phrase, or sentence]  say, rehearse, copy, check at end. All papers may be typed on the computer; turn paper sideways for algorithms. Perceptual- Motor class.

S-ocial: friendless, poor listening, listless affect, poor pragmatics

Adaptations: teach active listening (FAD) first thing in Char. Ed. Never have kids pick teams in front of class. Talk to students who bond to you about being this student’s partner and including him/her. Teach social skills like math facts; be direct & reinforce.
